COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 4th /5th November 2020.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 4th /5th November 2020.

The UK added 24,141 cases today and now has reported a total of 1,123,197 positive cases of COVID-19. We completed 301,131 tests yesterday.

12,949 people were in hospital on Tuesday 3rd, with 1,191 using a ventilator yesterday, 4th November.

In the 24 hours up until 5pm yesterday, we officially reported the loss of another 378 people who have tested positive to COVID-19 within 28 days. We now very sadly have a total of 48,120 officially reported losses of life in all settings. (Up until Friday 23rd October, 60,051 people had COVID written on their death certificate.)

Rep. Of Ireland 64,046 (+563) cases and 1,933 (+3) losses of life.

There have now been a total of 48,746,709 reported cases worldwide. The number of people who have lost their lives worldwide to COVID-19 is 1,235,435. Already 34,861,756 people have recovered.

051120 NEW national restrictions in England lockdown 2

No surprises, Parliament agreed to the new nationwide English restrictions, which went into force at midnight last night. Full guidance does now seem to be in place on the Gov dot UK website (click on the Coronavirus banner near the top). If you have the Test & Trace app. you'll have received an alert earlier, and can access the Gov site through the app. directly.

Bozza did a press conference today to celebrate his second lockdown.
He started by reminding us what a brilliant job they've done with testing, keeping businesses running, making our own PPE now... (hmmmm)
He read some figures very fast, like a headmaster reading a really big list of achievements on a Friday afternoon assembly.
12,320 patients are currently in hospital, up from 2,602 a month earlier. 1,142 people are now using a mechanical ventilator, compared to 369 a month earlier. 492 losses of life were reported yesterday.
In England from today, we are once again asking you to STAY AT HOME. You can only leave home for work (if you cannot work from home), education, essential activities and emergencies.
"The advice I've received does suggest that 4 weeks is enough time to make an impact."
Rishi has announced an extension to the furlough scheme (see below) until March. Help for the Self-Employed has also been raised, and cash grants for closed businesses are available.
29,000 rough sleepers have been moved off the streets, 2/3 are now in settled accommodation. (Nice one. Finally.)
The lockdown will automatically expire at midnight on 2nd December (unless we change anything in the meantime).
He handed over to Sir Simon Stevens, who told us about NHS England preparations for Winter.
He says the second wave is serious. We are attempting to catch up on care that was paused with the first wave, and we can only carry on doing that if we have enough capacity, and don't fill up with COVID patients.
Simon has a chart showing at the beginning of September we had under 500 COVID inpatients, at the beginning of October 2,000, and now we have 11,000 patients. That's the equivalent of 22 hospitals full of Coronavirus patients. These are facts, not forecasts or projections.
It takes 7-10 days from infection to hospitalisation
15-30 days from infection to discharge or death
Action is needed today because much of the next 4 weeks is written already - it will keep going up.
We are reminded of progress medically, and that everyone should HAVE YOUR FLU JAB, because getting flu and COVID together doubles the chance you won't survive.
We have however halved the mortality rate of COVID for some patients (those needing Oxygen), we have hopeful treatments, and the vaccines nearing the end of development.
He asks for our help. Protect The NHS - we are asked to help protect the ability of the NHS to do their jobs. Protect the staff. We can't fix Cancer right now, we can't heal everyone, but we CAN do something about the spread of Coronavirus.
Si answered press questions about vaccines - we have some initial vaccines now, but there are several different types, and some won't even come through until Summer. There are multiple opportunities for something to be incredibly effective.
Boris failed to answer press questions about the 'people who have lost their jobs, and then the furlough scheme has been expanded anyway'.
Press asked if 'we can be sure we won't have any restrictions over December or Christmas'. Si and Boris said it really is down to us, but Boris believes people will "be able to have as normal a Christmas as possible" which is a brilliant phrase to remember, and absolutely meaningless. Simon didn't seem very confident.
Press asked about unclear data, and Boris said they're trying to make it as clear as possible.(It's not their strong point, they're too shifty. Sometimes it's all very clear, other times it looks a little relaxed, like it's been massaged. Right now, when they want us all to stay home, it's a lot clearer.)
Boris went off on one about testing, but he explained the 3 types of COVID (have I got it?) testing, which was a good thing. (I covered them yesterday.)
Boris ended the briefing with a bittersweet return.
"Science is improving the whole time. We are, as a country, in a far, far better position to fight this.... Stay At Home. Protect The NHS. Save Lives."

Around The Box Reviews - Penguin Party Family Game and The Box - compendium of wooden games and puzzles (age 3-99+) Sent for review

'The Box' is a really carefully curated compendium of games, puzzles, fidgets and things to do. It's very small, and neat, virtually plastic-free (mostly wood), and perfect for anyone with time on their hands.  Everything in it can be washed, so it's ideal for someone who is ill. And it's really a gorgeous thing...

Around The Box was founded by husband and wife team, David and Alice. They first created The Box to give families with someone in hospital something special to do. It isn't just about the games and puzzles, they feel what’s most important is what happens around The Box. It brings people together.

Around The Box and Penguin Party games packaged away

So what is inside The Box?
All together the contents can be used for a really good variety of different games and puzzles. I've counted 11 already, and that doesn't include all of the extra suggestions, or "just playing penguins", which my 10 year old was doing earlier - with sound effects... Contents are packaged in single-use plastic, which usually I don't like, but as the compendium was designed to be appropriate for hospital use, in this case it's perfect.

The BOX modern wooden games and puzzles compendium contents displayed in small arrangement on table

The games and puzzles are all very easy to pick up and play, some of them have no rules, some are much more structured.  They include things like:
T Time - create a T shape using all of the shaped wooden blocks.
Rocket Launch - remove the rocket without touching the base
Curious Cube - turn the cube into a snake (easy), and back again (not so easy).
Measure Up - tape measure games
Penguin Party - which is also available as a standalone game.

It's beautiful, it really is. The wood is lovely in your hands, and the whole box full is very classic and elegant. Everything is very tactile, so if you want to fidget, there's plenty here.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 2nd / 3rd November 2020.

 COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 2nd / 3rd November 2020.

The UK added 20,018 cases today and now has reported a total of 1,073,882 positive cases of COVID-19. We completed 207,817 tests yesterday.

11,458 people were in hospital on Sunday 1st November, with 1,075 using a ventilator yesterday, 2nd Nov.

In the 24 hours up until 5pm yesterday, we officially reported the loss of another 397 people who have tested positive to COVID-19 within 28 days. We now very sadly have a total of 47,250 officially reported losses of life in all settings.

Rep. Of Ireland 63,048 (+298) cases and 1,922 (+5) losses of life.

There have now been a total of 47,658,516 reported cases worldwide. The number of people who have lost their lives worldwide to COVID-19 is 1,215,762. Already 34,213,154 people have recovered

"This is the moment when we have got to fix contact tracing. Only to be reaching 60% of people's known contacts is not good enough. He knows that, he doesn't try to defend that.... when you have 50,000 people being infected every single day, it is a massive logistical task. But if we are honest, we still had problems when it was a tenth of that number being infected every day. And this is the moment to recognise the uncomfortable truth, that this will be better done locally, and giving it to local authorities to take the ultimate responsibility.
And while we are making these changes to the contact tracing regime, to have only 20% of people who are contacted and asked to self-isolate actually comply suggests only one answer, which is that we as the state should pay their wages for the period that they have been asked to isolate. It is expensive, but it is less expensive than them not complying with this very important direction to isolate."
You might want to sit down. That was, astoundingly, Jeremy 'my ambition is to denationalise the NHS' Hunt, addressing Matt Hancock in parliament's COVID-19 debate yesterday. 2020, the year anything can happen, and apparently will.

The UK's terror threat level has been raised from ‘substantial’ to ‘severe’, in light of the horrific attacks in and around religious buildings in France and Austria this week.

Picture Show Shadow Charade Game Review (Age 7+) Sent by Asmodee

October's review for Asmodee Blogger Boardgame Club is a little late (sorry!), but earlier in the Autumn they sent us Picture Show: Shadow Charade Game for review. This is a great family game which doesn't involve writing clues, miming, drawing, or even acting - instead players use pre-cut magnetic shapes, a screen and lighting, and recreate their scenario, word or phrase using the medium of shadow puppetry.

Suitable for anyone aged over around 7, and 2 teams of 2-4 people each, or even more if you can fit them around the table, it's loads of fun!

Picture Show Shadow Charade Game box front with illustration of gameplay and smiley people

Inside the box is everything you'll need except the batteries - 3 x AAA, and a crosshead screwdriver to fit them.

Picture Show family party game review box contents

Before first play you'll need to allow 10 minutes to 'press out' all of the magnetic shapes. Be careful because they are thick and well made, but some are a little bit easy to bend, and you don't want to lose a foot.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 31st October / November 1st 2020.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News update 31st October / November 1st 2020.

The UK added 23,254 cases today and now has reported a total of 1,034,914 positive cases of COVID-19. (We passed 1m cases yesterday.) We completed 347,626 tests yesterday.

On Wednesday 28th October 1,442 people were admitted to hospital in the UK. 10,918 people were in hospital on Thursday 29th, with 978 using a ventilator on Friday 30th October. We now very sadly have a total of 46,717 officially reported losses of life in all settings.

Up until Friday 16th October, 58,925 people had COVID written on their death certificate,

Rep. Of Ireland 62,002 (+546) cases and 1,915 (+2) losses of life.

There have now been a total of 46,709,156 reported cases worldwide. The number of people who have lost their lives worldwide to COVID-19 is 1,203,771. Already 33,639,417 people have recovered.

Health Workers Stress

Data presented to the UK Government on Friday showed that either the numbers people messed up, or they just underestimated COVID, which is also a bit of a mess up. Fresh projections are much worse than previous 'worst case scenarios', and growth of COVID cases is speeding up so rapidly that even areas with very low infection rates right now, will overwhelm their hospitals within weeks. (The people of Bolton, the NW, and the NE weren't all breaking the rules - they just never stood a chance.) The death toll would be big.

Major UK briefing yesterday...  I covered Boris' announcement, which was preceded by a leak in the papers, yesterday - so I won't repeat it all today.
England will be going into national restrictions for a month, from a minute past midnight on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. The measures are due to end on December 2nd.
Parliament will debate and vote next week, but the government have published a detailed breakdown of what the measures will include. I'll add a link below.

Boris' briefing led to instant responses from Teaching Unions, asking for schools to be closed to all but key workers and vulnerable children only, while any national measures apply. Universities and Colleges have asked for remote tuition.
Much as my kids love being in school, I do feel for their teachers, especially those who are a little older or have had medical issues. It must be ridiculously stressful to have to choose between your own health, and best practice or support for the young person standing in front of you - 50 hundred million times a day.

West Yorkshire will no longer be going into Tier 3 Restrictions on Monday. That's been cancelled.

England COVID Briefing 31st October 2020

"If we did not act now, then the chances of the NHS being overwhelmed wold be very, very high."
Chris Whitty.

After the news that England are going into a month long national "lockdown" was leaked last night (and apparently it wasn't meant to be this time), Boris had little choice but to hold an England Coronavirus briefing.

He was joined by England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance - (who both looked like the adrenaline is flowing, now they've had the gate opened and can say what they feel instead of biting their tongues).

Halloween Lanterns collage from my family

Obviously they started with evidence from Chris and Pat:
The weekly case rate and rate change slides are grim. The darker they are, the worse they are, and they're dark. Spread in people aged over 60 (who are far more likely to be seriously ill) is everywhere, and the charts for this age group are not light.
The ONS data shows that prevalence has been going up rapidly over the last few weeks (since school reopening), we have around 50k new cases per day and rising.
Measures are slowing growth, but really they are not flattening the curve. The NW seems to be making headway, but not quickly enough.
Cases are rising in all areas, including in people over 60.
Hospital admissions are going up in an accelerating line. Currently in the NW hospital admissions are almost at the peak we saw in Spring, in all other areas, it's rising rapidly. (As soon as you have big numbers, and are still doubling every 9 days, you get to massive numbers very quickly.)
If we do nothing, then by December we are looking at 3,000 hospital admissions a day (and these people don't all arrive and leave, they may be there for weeks).

Boris says "No sensible Prime Minister can ignore these figures." I agree. He explains he doesn't want to close anything, and they hoped that local measures would be effective, but they weren't. He thanked people who have put up with restrictions for a long time (Thanks!).

"We have to be humble in the face of nature." I TOTALLY agree. We are just animals on a rock. We will never be bigger than nature, but we can use our intelligence to fight back...

He explains we DO NOT want to be in a position where Doctors and Nurses are forced to choose who will live, and who will die - and that isn't just COVID patients, it's everyone who ends up in hospital, for whatever reason. (This has happened in many places - Ecuador, Lombardy, New York - and it's truly horrific for anyone involved)...

The Game Weavers by Rebecca Zahabi - Young Adult Fiction Book Review (sent for review)

I was sent a copy of The Game Weavers by Rebecca Zahabi this Summer for review, and it's a really good read, so I was more than happy to join in this promotional book tour for the UK release.
On the surface The Game Weavers is a fictional story about a young professional game player, but it is far more than that. This is a book about finding your place in the world, and clinging on to what is most dear, whatever life throws at you. It's a book about loyalty, family, and having the confidence to be the person you are.

The Game Weavers by Rebecca Zahabi book cover shows hand with golden glowing sparkles flowing from it

The book starts with an introduction to Twine - a futuristic game where players 'weave' characters who battle for control of the playing field. It paints an amazing picture in my head, and one which I'm sure is very different for everyone who reads this book.

Seo Kuroaku is a champion Twine player. He has a really close and protective relationship with his younger brother Minjun, and the reader very soon discovers that this is because they were abandoned by their mother as children.

291020 COVID cases and deaths by WHO region

"For the second consecutive week, Europe accounts for the greatest proportion of new cases, with over 1.3M new cases this past week – a 33% increase compared to the previous week – contributing nearly half of all new cases worldwide this week (46%)."
World Health Organisation weekly epidemiological update.

"We must learn now, that the people who went to Eton can't run this country. They've had it,  they've tried to do it, and this little small group who all went to school in the same class, it doesn't work. So I feel we need some working class people that have lived a real life. People that are in touch with what's going on in reality..."
Round of applause for Danny Dyer there. The COVID-19 response has treated regular people as numbers in a machine. Go to work, eat out, shop, but don't see anyone you care about - for months on end. A real world recipe for failure.

Boris has been warned that if he doesn't sort this out, he'll ruin Christmas. He's been warned by various people, including the Shadow Health Minister, and SAGE, his own Scientific Advisory Group.
If he ruins Christmas it would place him in number 1 spot for the UK's biggest joy thief ever, narrowly pipping current leader, Oliver 'we'll not be having merrymaking on a Holy day' Cromwell.

UPCOMING UK RESTRICTION CHANGES:
On 30th October (tomorrow) Nottinghamshire moves to Local COVID Alert Level 3: Very High
On 31 October (Friday) the following move to Local COVID Alert Level 2: High - Amber Valley, Bolsover, Charnwood, Derby City, Derbyshire Dales, Dudley, East Riding of Yorkshire, High Peak, Kingston-Upon-Hull, Luton, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Oxford City, South Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Telford and Wrekin
On 2nd November (Monday) the whole of West Yorkshire - including Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield - moves to Local COVID Alert Level 3: Very High.

Bristol is being placed into a set of special restrictions all on it's own. Rather than 'Tier 2 HIGH Alert', they're having 'Tier 1+', which is presumably 'A BIT HIGH ALERT':
- Tighter enforcement
- More local control over test and trace
- Targeted focus on working adults (aged 30 - 60)
- Introduction of COVID marshals to patrol the city

Lo-Dough Review - low calorie, high fibre, bread and pastry alternative (sent for review).

Lo-Dough is a vegetarian, and GMO, dairy, nut and soy-free alternative to regular flour dough. It has 90% less carbs and is incredibly low in calories. In addition the original Lo-Dough is gluten-free. It can be helpful for all kinds of people, on all kinds of restrictive diets. We've been sent a box full of products to try, including some of the original Lo-Dough bases.

Lo-Dough products all bursting out from a cardboard box

Since trying some horrendous gluten-free bread a few years ago, I've been a sceptical about 'alternatives', but I was very intrigued to give Lo-Dough a try. Is it tasty and easy to use? Well, yes actually. It's incredibly impressive.,,

Lo-Dough Miracle Cake Bars in packaging

Inside our box we had some of the brand new Miracle Cake Bars - Chunky Double Chocolate. We all tried them straight away, and I'm very pleased I split one between us because they do qualify as a small meal.

Lo-Dough miracle cake bar open and broken in half to show chocolatey goodness

They're lovely. Incredibly filling and containing just 131 calories which seems to be mainly comprised of fibre (over 1/3 of your recommended daily intake). They also only have 0.7g of sugar each, and you'd never know it. This is sweet and chocolatey goodness.
